How it worksSkylight Shades and Blinds
Even skylights can be covered with shades or blinds! Skylights offer great views of the sky and let in lots of natural light, but having the option to cover them with a shade or blind gives you full control over the amount of light at any given time. Additionally, they directly face the sun when it is highest in the sky, and a skylight shade works well as an insulator.
Light Filtering skylight shades are a great option as they can diffuse light into a room even when closed. Skylight shades can also be made with blackout fabric, allowing you to completely block light if you so choose. Skylight blinds offer more in terms of light control, since you can tilt slats to adjust how much light is let in, however you won’t get the ability to filter the light as you would with a skylight shade.

- Insulating: Skylight shades are excellent insulators, especially with windows directly facing the sun when it’s highest in the sky.
- Complete Coverage: Don’t let skylights go uncovered! Skylight blinds and shades can be custom made to fit and match the rest of your décor.
- Help Available: Available with all our blinds and shades, but if you’re having trouble at any point in the process with your skylights, our design consultants are on-hand to help at 1-800-505-1905.
Optional Upgrades
Skylight shades and blinds are also available with a range of upgrade options to further customize and get the perfect window treatment for your room.
- Skypoles: Available in various lengths, these poles make opening and closing the shades on hard-to-reach skylights much easier, especially for those that want to adjust how much light enters throughout the day.
- Light Filtering: Use a light filtering skylight shade to help diffuse incoming light or get the maximum light blockage with a blackout shade.
- Insulating: Cellular shades are great for insulating skylights as well as helping keep energy costs down.
Other Considerations
To make things a bit easier, here are a few things to consider for skylight shades and blinds:
- Cellular shades are great choices for skylights, and can provide insulating and light filtering benefits.
- Many skylights are accompanied by “standard” rectangular windows underneath. For a seamless look, consider using the same style blind or shade for these skylights as well.
- Some skylights are very high or in hard-to-reach places; adding in a skypole offers extended reach to make opening and closing easier.
- Because skylights directly face the sun, choosing a blind or shade with excellent light filtering and insulating properties can save energy usage and provide superior light control.
